Cyberpunk 2077’s surprise new update is here

As promised, update 2.2 for Cyberpunk 2077 is here, bringing with it a host of new features and fixes for CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi role-playing game. Tuesday’s update arrives four years to the day of Cyberpunk 2077’s original (extremely buggy) release, and gives players new character customization options, new photo mode functionality, and other gameplay improvements.

Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.2 update came as something of a surprise, since developer CD Projekt Red said that the game’s previous patch — released in December 2023 — would be “the last big update.” But CD Projekt Red has since tapped another developer, Virtuos, to aid in continuing development of the game, the studio revealed in a livestream on Tuesday.

That livestream touches on the changes coming in update 2.2, but for players who don’t have the time to watch all 44 minutes of it, there are some highlights. Many of the bigger changes are cosmetic; players can now use CrystalCoat paint jobs on a wider range of vehicles in Cyberpunk 2077 and they can copy other cars’ color schemes on the fly using TwinTone technology. Here’s how the new TwinTone feature works, according to CDPR’s patch notes:

Simply scan a car with your Kiroshi optics, switch to the TWINTONE™ tab, then save the vehicle’s color scheme for a small fee. You’ll then be able to select the scheme in the TWINTONE™ database under the CrystalCoat™ menu. There, you’ll also find generic color schemes for all CrystalCoat™-compatible vehicles as well as unique color schemes exclusive to the vehicle model from which they were copied. Please note that color scheme cloning is not authorized on vehicles that are linked to quests, belong to the NCPD or that are incompatible with CrystalCoat™ tech.

Cyberpunk 2077’s character creator also received a ton of new customization options, including:

Other tweaks in update 2.2 include additional face time with Johnny Silverhand, who will sometimes chill in the passenger seat of your car, and numerous community-requested features for photo mode.
